Bisi Bela Bhaat

Ingredients :

  1. Ramajeyam BPT/Sona Masoori – (Single Boiled (Puzhungal Arisi) / Raw Rice) – 1 cup
  2. Toovar / arhar dal – 1/2 cup
  3. Chopped carrot – 1/2 cup
  4. Chopped french beans – 1/2 cup
  5. Chopped potatoes – 1/2 cup
  6. Peeled madras onions – 1 cup
  7. Grated coconut – 1 cup
  8. Bengal gram / chana dal – 2 tbsp
  9. Coriander seeds – 2 tbsp
  10. Urad dal / white lentil – 1 tbsp
  11. Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  12. Cinnamon powder – 1/4 tsp
  13. Red chili – 4
  14. Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  15. Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  16. Tamarind – 2 tbsp
  17. Cooking oil – 2 tbsp
  18. Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  19. Asafetida a pinch
  20. Salt to taste

Method :

  1. Heat a frying pan and dry roast chana dal, urad dal, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, red chilies; cinnamon with a pinch of asafetida for few minutes till urad dal turns golden brown. Add grated coconut and sauté for few seconds.
  2. When it cools down, add to your blender and blitz it to make a coarse paste.
  3. Soak the tamarind in 1 cup of warm water and keep aside for 30 minutes. Strain to remove seeds and pulp and keep it aside.
  4. Soak rice and arhar dal in some water for 30 minutes. Drain the water and keep it ready.
  5. Add 2 tbsp oil in your pressure cooker and when oil is warm add mustard seeds, a pinch of asafetida.
  6. When mustard seeds crackle add small onions and sauté till it turns golden brown. Add curry leaves and sauté for few seconds.
  7. Now add soaked rice, arhar dal, chopped vegetables, tamarind water and coconut grounded mixture.
  8. Add 4 cups of water and mix it well. When it starts boiling, add salt and turmeric powder and close the cooker. Give 3 whistles and when the pressure comes down, transfer it into a bowl.
  9. You can add some ghee before serving and garnish it with some grated coconut.
